Auto Dealers Not Licensed as Insurance Agents in Montana
State Auditor George P. Porter ruled that auto dealers and salesmen cannot be licensed as insurance agents. He noted a plan where a car bought in Montana would be insured automatically through Alexander & Alexander and the Palmetto Fire Insurance Co, which is not authorized to operate in Montana. The ruling requires insurance written only by department approved agents who are Montana residents, and acceptance of Palmetto coverage must be optional with the buyer.
