In 1929 livestock were valued at 3 478 044 dollars while real estate assessment reached 7 848 344 dollars. The figures reflect a broader agricultural and property valuation shift captured in the annual summaries.
Frank Eliel, official delegate from the Dillon Rotary Club, reported at the weekly luncheon on the international Rotary convention in Chicago. He cited friendliness as the keynote and read excerpts from several addresses delivered at the meeting.
Eaverhead county total assessed valuation for 1930 is 17 346 772, a decrease of 505 568 from last year's 17 852 640. Livestock valuation fell from 4 036 471 in 1929 to 8 478 044 this year, while personal property other than continued on page 5.
Mildred Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Peterson of the Big Hole basin, died in Los Angeles early Thursday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident a month earlier. She had a brain concussion and complications developed last week. The parents headed to Los Angeles and the funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Masonic lodge in Dillon.
Salmon Idaho defeated Dillon 7 to 2 at the athletic park last Sunday afternoon aided by errors by local fielders. Dillon scored two in the first inning while McIntosh pitched a near airtight game for Salmon. Vandegrift and Gordon pitched well for Dillon but poor support undermined their effort.
Miss Janet Large sister of Mrs. Herbert Hoover and national Girl Scouts leader stayed at the Edinger home near Divide for a week with her daughter Mrs Large. She conferred with leaders from neighboring cities while Miss Helen Ida Best represented Dillon girls in an interview with Mrs Large.
Contractors began oiling operations on the Butte Dillon highway with a seven mile first section north of Dillon. The project will close the road briefly during work with oiling and graveling progressing, creating a 64 mile continuous oil road in Montana. Sage hen early season dates August 3 4 5 were set by the state fish and game commission in Beaverhead and other counties.
Federal prohibition agents led by Ben Holter of Butte conducted their most extensive local raid in two years, visiting seven establishments in the city suspected of selling intoxicating liquors. Some venues were locked, warrants served, intoxicants found and destroyed, and all attendants released for future appearance.
Thirteen year old Glen Crampton catches two eight pound rainbow trout at Hidden Lake in Hughes & McCalebs big fish contest. He and Sam Freeman also helped scoop seven big fish during a camping trip at Vic ks place. The fair plans include an exhibition of a Utah & Northern train replica and a Fort Hall Indian dance troupe visiting for the county fair celebration.
Beaverhead voters show strong turnout with only a third of electors casting ballots in the primary. Early returns from 20 of 22 precincts name Gladys Garrins and Emerick leading in their contests, with Anderson and Hartwig also winning in county races. Galen Carries Beaverhead for U S Senator while Evans leads for representative and Leonard Young tops nine in the railroad commissioner field.
A strong earthquake centered near Three Forks and Logan shook BAVERHEAD county and other Montana towns at six o'clock Saturday evening. Buildings rattled dishes windows and hanging lamps swayed as the crust trembled in the most severe quake here since June 1925. Helena Butte and others felt the tremor with Dillon reporting a lasting vibration.
Beav erhead county received long awaited rains last week ending drought. A thick drizzle from Thursday night into Friday soaked the valley and surrounding areas deep into the soil. Some sections saw cloudburst like downpours and Horse Prairie bridges washed out. otherwise minor damage and safer conditions followed.
QEYEHAL thefts have been reported in Dillon and nearby communities over the past days. City Officer Warren Sutterland captured two alleged thieves early yesterday after they allegedly attempted to drain the gas tank of an automobile owned by D. A. Galt of Beaverhead Auto Sales. Continued on page 4.
