Three test plots on the Bannack Placer Gold Mining company properties at Bannack yielded $60 last week. John Pendergast, an official, stated the figures and displayed the gold in a small bottle to several friends.
Roy Forrester, Dillon Gun Club ace, marked a perfect score of 50x50 to win the regular club shoot at the Fairgrounds last Wednesday night. Clyde Edwards and L. H. Smith followed with 48x50, while a large field posted varied scores as the club unveiled a new clubhouse at the fairgrounds and the Westwood refreshment parlor opened in the Andrus hotel.
Members of the Beaverhead Mining association discussed an annual picnic at a Sugar Bowl cafe meeting. A joint outing with the Lemhi group was proposed for September 6 at the Big Hole battlefield if Idaho agrees. Secretary Roy B. Herndon will coordinate with Lemhi and plans will follow.
Brownie Paddock of Dillon has been awarded the mail transport contract between Butte and Dillon. He will handle first class mail parcels and special deliveries, operating daily except Sunday, departing Butte at 4 a.m. and arriving in Dillon at 6 a.m. The bid, $2,600, secures the route through 1924.
Yesterday marked the 75th birthday of W. H. McManus a well known pioneer mining man of the county. In observance of the occasion he was given a picnic event by friends and neighbors.
Butte July 15 ceiling on the Butte Dillon highway is now complete. The last stretch between Butte and Melrose was finished this week, giving motorists clear sailing to Beaverhead county metropolis. Crews moved to Dillon to complete the segment to the Idaho line, nine miles finished.
Public finances were the focus of three talks at the Dillon Rotary club meeting. Speakers included Chancellor M A Brannon, Clerk and Recorder Albert B Baker, and C A Bergeson. Brannon criticized a Supreme Court ruling on the 38 million Institutional bond issue and said a tribunal review is likely. Baker outlined the county budget system and its purposes.
A public free film show titled A Tour Through the Ford Factory screens at Bergeson Motor Co next week. The educational feature traces raw material gathering at Rouge Dearborn to steelmaking and car assembly, with narration guiding viewers through the plant.
Jack Hawkins a noted pioneer resident of the state celebrated his 83rd birthday last Friday. Friends visited at his son W. W. Hawkins of South Pacific Street to offer congratulations. He shared memories from his days as an Indian scout and fighter, and his service with the Texas Rangers. He was a popular Custer County sheriff and long-time superintendent of Miles City Industrial School.
James Moran and Glen Allen were tried before Judge L. P. Phillips yesterday and found guilty of assaulting E. K. Wakeman, a special officer for the Oregon Short Line at Lima. Each man received 30 days behind the county jail.
The American Legion mining district convention at Wisdom drew about 600 attendees over two days. Delegates included 50 ex service men from Salmon Idaho. William L. Chapman of Butte was elected district commander and Dr. R. D. Curry of Dillon became finance officer. Dillon Legionnaires attended as well. A Saturday business session, banquet, and dance followed.
Mrs Elizabeth Palin aged 70 died Monday from injuries after a fall. Funeral held this afternoon at Brundage mortuary, interment in Mountain View cemetery. Born in Zanesville Ohio she moved to Dillon from Dakota several years ago and lived with her daughter Mrs L M Gillman. She is survived by a son in Elgin IL and several grandchildren.
