Eighty six Montana State Normal College students earned spring quarter honor roll honors led by Lela Mae Hoffstot of Sidney and Ruth Margaret Phelps of Deer Lodge with three grade points per credit. Hiram Lapham of Jackson placed third and Marguerite Collins of Dillon sixth, with other Beaverhead county students listed in approximate order.

Primary contest interest rises as election nears
Beaverhead electors are reminded to use the separate judicial ballot listing non party candidates for the judicial ticket. Four district judge hopefuls and two supreme court candidates appear in the race as ballots head to voters in Dillon and the Fifth judicial district. Absentee ballots have been mailed and voting day is July 21 with returns to be tallied in the court room.

Beaverhead Men Report Drought and Grasshopper Calamity
Beaverhead county residents who visited eastern Montana say drought and grasshoppers have created near ruin for thousands of ranchers. Representative Joe Metlen, Montana Stockgrowers Association president, says eastern Montana conditions are almost unbelievable and farmers remain true to their cattle operations despite losses.

Beaverhead county ranchers completed the annual shearing last week as most outfits finished. The final wool loads were sent to the First National wool warehouse, with prices expected to be favorable. Haying overlapped with shearing as rains paused the wild hay harvest, which will begin next week in many areas.

Vigilante Experimental Range Formed Near Alder
Leon Hurtt leads research at the Northern Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station returning from supervising Vigilante Experimental Range construction south of Alder on the Ruby river. 4-H Safety Activity Contest in Montana Districts
Agricultural extension notes announce a July 7 safety contest sponsored by the Montana Farm Bureau Federation. Montana Shooters Dominate State Trap Titles
The Sportsmen's Review notes Ted Renfro of the Dillon Gun Club led Montana at Helena with 199 in singles 95 in doubles 96 in handicap and 390 all around. Other state shoots cited include West Virginia Spartanburg Minnesota with top scorers also winning all four titles. Runners up in Helena often posted higher scores than winners elsewhere.

Forest Fire Regulations Enforced In Beaverhead Forest
New forest fire rules take effect last Thursday across Beaverhead National Forest. Smoking restricted to designated areas. travelers must carry shovel axe and bucket. Guards will stop vehicles to inspect gear as crews enforce prevention measures. One fire reported over the holiday outside the forest, allowed to burn out.

Fugitive Is Successful Escape From Roe Ranch Two Story Leap
A fugitive named William Dietrich, 26, escaped from officers by leaping from a two story window at the E. B. Roe ranch in Red Rock. He was recaptured hours later at Armatead and held on an assault charge. Dietrich allegedly beat a ranch employee, then sought entry to the ranch house to take clothes. Officers feared another drop, but he vanished after wading the river.

Worms Appear in Dillon and Vicinity Strain Crops
Small green webworms spread from the Poindexter and Orr ranch in Blacktail to Dillon, damaging alfalfa and other crops while avoiding wild hay. They were seen in the southern city area on Saturday but in smaller numbers than in Butte. The worms feed on thistles and weeds, not gardens, with irrigation ditches used as a control measure and Paris green and lead arsenate mentioned as methods in Butte.

Clouds Burst Floods Dillon Streets In Beaverhead Valley
A severe cloudburst noon Monday flooded Dillon streets with miniature lakes in low spots. Inadequate drainage and a new fire department pump truck helped remove water. Some basements flooded but overall damage seen as minor. The downpour lasted about half an hour.
