A jumbled June 26 30 1940s newspaper page blends Soviet archeology rumors and Mussolini speeches with dodgy quips on Russia Germany and Britain. It notes a draft camp scene and a San Francisco court case while hinting at global war and policy shifts as June ends.
A thunderstorm ended the annual 4-H club elimination contest after a successful event with over 50 entrants. Pat Smyth of Dillon won the style revue with a soldier blue informal dress, while Margaret Anne Ames earned second for a brown wool flannel two piece suit.
For the third straight year the Gleed Bros. clip of 11 500 fleeces led the state wool market at 39 cents per pound. Munro Kincaid and Edgehill Inc bought the crop, with Sam Ditty as local agent. The clip, a bulk Lincoln cross half blood, ships in four carloads to Boston via rail and water through Duluth and the Great Lakes. Saturday saw a million pounds unloaded at the First National Bank warehouse, about half of Beaverhead county 1941 production.
Jane Waldorf came home Tuesday evening to spend the summer with her parents Mr and Mrs A F Waldorf. She will return in the fall to teach after accepting a position at a college.
A Montana draft report shows 2 143 men drafted from 73 697 registrants last Oct 16 with Beaverhead county sending 46. Nine counties Blaine Flathead Gallatin Petroleum Phillips Roosevelt Valley Wheatland and Wibaux have yet to furnish conscripts as quotas are over subscribed. Beaverhead officials set a tentative quota of 77 later revised to 74 on May 29 with unclear induction timing.
Beaverhead county committee members plan to attend a district wheat meeting July 10 in Deer Lodge to explain the 1941 heat marketing program to county committeemen and county agents. The meeting will cover wheat growers quotas following the nationwide referendum and includes Ravalli Mineral Missoula Granite Deer Lodge Powell Edison Jefferson Beaverhead counties. Jesse James reference appears in a separate note about a Dillon resident who registered with the selective service and whose questionnaire was returned as address unknown.
Mrs. J. P. Best Jr. was elected to succeed Mrs. Earl Opp as president of the Beaverhead Republican Women's club. New officers include Mrs. Edwin Whitworth as vice president, Mrs. F. C. McFadden as secretary, and Mrs. H. M. Warner as treasurer.
Beaverhead county marked July 1 as new 21 to 35 year old registrants arrive at the selective service office. The draft board will tally data for state transmission as names from Dillon and surrounding areas are recorded.
The first southwest Montana range ram show and sale is scheduled for Monday September 29 at the Beaverhead county fairgrounds pavilion Dillon. Fourteen breeders from several counties plan to participate with two pens of each breed per breeder and all rams will be sold to prevent prize money from attracting show rams. An estimated three to five hundred rams will be exhibited and sold serving as a bazaar style exhibit. Local committee members are Howard Morse Edwin Whitworth and Roscoe Cornell.
Enrollment at the Normal College summer school reaches 155, below the 1940 level. The largest group is juniors with 84 students, seniors 41, sophomores 23, and freshmen 7. The chart shows rising certification effects with shifts in class standings.
Negotiations completed for sale of Montana Auto Supply Co. from Fred Woodside to Joseph G. White of Great Falls. White, ex Chevrolet and Miller carburetor veteran, becomes local manager with Sterling Dagner named service manager. Mrs White and two daughters were visiting Den.
An official notice states Birch Creek CCC camp will be abandoned and 29 personnel moved to Whitehall. Buildings remain intact, with a watchman stationed to protect property, and the camp may reopen if CCC enlistments rise.
Twelve boys and 12 girls from Montana competed in the Ford Motor Co contest in Helena. Donna Trolinger of Dillon showed strong driving but did not place in money. Loretta Parshall of Poplar won girls first prize. K. M. Davis of Helena won boys first prize. Donna Polich and David Rowand of Helena took second in their divisions.
Beaverhead county agri cultural planning board and representatives from other agencies met Friday to form a county labor board. The group will report monthly to the state sub committee on farm labor and includes Emil Schindler Jackson Floyd Kenison Dell L A Taylor Rei sle Jennings Mayland as secretary. About 3000 farm and ranch workers are active in haying and harvesting with 75 having left county for conscription or enlistment.
Beaverhead county prepares an aluminum collection drive for the week of July 21 to 26. H. H. Hawkins E. W. Bond and Mrs. Earl Opp head a local advisory group with state and national committee support. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will aid city and county groups in gathering scrap metal for aircraft production. Co. Agt. Bernard Williams leads rural efforts with 4-H members collecting the scrap.
The Dillon Rotary Club held a fun night at the little red school house with recitations stunts stories songs and a piano solo. Proxy Joe Wedum presented sheepskins to participants and Frank Tyro noted Rotary International in Denver with about ten thousand attendees supporting greater foreign contact.
After two busy Saturdays four couples filed for marriage licenses at the clerk of the court office, but last Saturday showed a lull until 10:30 p.m. when Edward T. Horton of Dillon and Jean Burch of Leadore Idaho obtained papers and married by Justice George Opp. Ruth Fairbank and Pete Spehar attended the ceremony.
Yesterday morning at ten o'clock a class of young girls gathered for free swimming instruction offered by the Girl Scout Council. The session continued to noon with an older group taking over, and lessons will run each Tuesday and Thursday mornings with a lifeguard on duty and senior Scouts assisting Dorothy Ames Pat Curry and Florence Caster instructors this week.
