Texas Steer Crowned U S Grand Champion

Big Spring 4 H member Lloyd Robinson showed a velvet brown and white hereford, weighing 1075 pounds, to win the grand champion title at the 1950 International Livestock Show in Chicago. The steer sold for a record 12 dollars per pound, a peak price for beef. Robinson, a 19 year old cotton farmer's son, had previously won the Texas state fair prize. County Agent Durward Lewter aided the selection after buying the calf for 140 dollars at the TD ranch in Raton New Mexico. Second place went to Iowa State College with Toby a 830 pound Aberdeen Angus junior calf.
