Civil War Engineer James Abrams Dies in California

James Abrams a respected county resident and Civil War veteran died at his sister's home in Los Angeles after kidney trouble. Born in Ohio 76 years ago he served as chief engineer aboard Farragut’s Hartford, helped capture New Orleans, and fought at Mobile Bay. He later prospected in Montana and California, ran a hotel, and settled in Grasshopper Valley before moving to California for the winter. He is survived by his wife and sister.

Death of Two Year Old Boy in Kentucky Avenue Home

The two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ditty died yesterday morning from complications of diseases at their home on Kentucky avenue. Funeral services were held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. RE. Ostrander with interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Injured Worker Loses Hand In Dynamite Blast Near Big Hole

John D. Hyde a 66 year old Sheridan Montana man employed by W A Ralston was injured while blasting dynamite at a Big Hole excavation. He lost the left hand and left eye, suffered head and chest bruises, and the right hand stump was amputated above the wrist. Hyde is at Murray’s hospital in Butte with a fair chance to recover despite severe shock.

Oldest Buggy in the State Finds a Home in Montana

A. F. Graeter of Dillon preserves what may be Montana’s oldest buggy. Built in 1862 63 and shipped from Bellaire Illinois, it cost 500 dollars and has hauled miners between Bannack and Virginia City. The one seated buggy has survived hard roads, floods, and snow and now sits in a shed awaiting a home with the State Historical Society.

Silver dollar saves life in depot gunfight incident

A sheepherder Lebo disarmed a man named Daniel McCarthy at the depot after a dispute over pay for a dog. A .41 Colt discharged a round using .88 caliber cartridges, but a silver dollar in Lebo’s pocket stopped the bullet. McCarthy was arrested. arraigned for first degree assault with a $1,000 bond. trial set for early next month.

A Dillon delegation will visit Butte next Sunday for Dillon Day at the Leggat hotel with a Dion guest list. The Oregon Short Line offers $2.40 round trips if 50 Dillon residents travel. Attendees travel by depot streetcar to the hotel for a banquet and cabaret.
