City Treasurer F C McFadden announced a last day rush brought total permits to 622 before 5 pm Saturday. The count trails last fall’s issuance by about 200, signaling many residents still lack permits under Ordinance 222 which imposes a $10 to $50 fine for driving without one.
The Pheasant, Dillon soft drink place and card room, reported burglarized at an early Sunday hour. Two slot machines were taken after attackers forced a transom entry and unlocked the rear door. Only the machines disappeared. manager notes no other losses. Holly Haynes received 90 days in county jail after pleading guilty to vagrancy. others tied to bedding theft from Ben Frohman cabin were released after bedding was recovered.
Dillon resident Al Groshean sustained serious injuries yesterday when his car slid on an icy Moose Creek hill and plunged into a ditch after missing a culvert. His wife Mrs. Groshean escaped with minor injuries. They were rushed to St. James Hospital in Butte for treatment.
In Minneapolis the Jobs for Women slogan marks a state effort to boost female employment as men’s prospects improve. Officials report 14 divisions have been set up outside Minneapolis and about 9,000 women have registered for help. Dreng Bjornaraa leads the field program.
Federal orders cut CWA crew hours to 15 per week in districts nationwide. In communities over 2,500 the cap is 24 hours, with Dillon at 2,422 population barely below. Crews progress on 10 miles of highway near Mill Point while other Beaverhead projects provide jobs for local men and women under CWA auspices.
Beaverhead county reports its mildest winter in years as rain blanketed the area. Official records show December lows near 7 degrees above zero and highs around 58, with January moderate highs near 46 and lows near 8 above. Secretary Wallace warned cattlemen not to expect miraculous changes and called for legislation to empower the Agricultural Adjustment Administration.
Dances planned for Tuesday January 30 at the city hall auditorium in celebration of President Roosevelt's birthday. Howard Rosenau chairs the committee with tickets selling this week at local stores for 1 dollar with free admission for women. Proceeds go to the Warm Springs Foundation in Georgia.
Past District Governor Fred Bennion paid an official visit to the Dillon Rotary Club at the Metlen hotel. Frank A. Hazelbaker presided and Bennion spoke on international friendships and Rotary contacts, with sketches of the recent Rotary International convention in Boston.
Six physically handicapped young men and women are receiving training in Dillon under the state civilian rehabilitation bureau. Leif Fredericks announced the program during a visit, noting all six attend Montana State Normal College and aim to become teachers. The bureau pays school expenses and provides a small monthly living allowance. The head interviewed two other applicants and tentatively arranged a mechanical course for a Bannack youth in Billings. Free training and maintenance aid are available to Montana residents with disabling injuries. about 65 people are aided, roughly a quarter of them women.
Beavershead valley ranchers pledged 650 dollars toward a new pump truck for the Dillon volunteer fire department after a Saturday city hall meeting. Chief O T Vandegrift said funds and interviews with farmers point to likely purchase and payment plans. Additional soliciting committee members were named including L Ott Gordon J W Walters William Angove.
Dillon's volunteer fire department raced to a Sunday dawn blaze in the Baptist cottage behind the church. Alarm reached from the Red Star garage. volunteers at city hall auditorium also responded, extinguishing the fire before major damage occurred.
Montana livestock and school groups, once divided, unite in backing Senator J. E. Erickson's bill to return public domain to the state. Stockmen favor state administration of grazing lands and schools welcome rental fees to support state programs.
Beaverhead Order of De Molay installs officers for the term at a regular meeting in the Masonic temple. John Christensen left for California to join the Navy. Harrison Kellum is installed as master councilor. Other officers include Herman Schwab, Chester Gilbert, Francis Dean, Billy Welborn, Amos Elliott, Don Gilbert, Ray Lewis, Russell Underwood, Erwin Christensen, Philip Legeett.
The new Business and Professional Women’s club of Dillon held its first regular meeting at the Andrus hotel parlors with President Luella Stickney presiding. Plans for future activities were discussed and membership is expected to grow quickly.
Optimism marked the National Woolgrowers Association annual meeting in Salt Lake City with speakers noting a favorable price outlook for 1934. Murray E. Stebbins, on return to Billings, commented on his committee work in predatory animal and public domain fields. Secretary Stebbins of the Montana Woolgrowers' association said Boston wool buyers also foresee a positive price trend.

The state board of equalization announced that more than 300 retail beer licenses have been issued under the new law. The old hotel and restaurant licenses were abolished and replaced by four classes: wholesale, brewery, retail, and club. More than 3800 retail licenses had been mailed, with the fee cut from 3800 to 200.
Dillon will take part in the World Bridge Olympic on Thursday night February 1 at the St James guild hall. Mrs. George M. Gosman and Mrs. Gud D. Combes are game captains. Entry fee is 1.00. The Olympic committee provides decks and 16 hands are played and scored by experts for two platinum world championship trophies and 400 silver trophies for state national and provincial champions.
Beaverhead Mining Association has arranged a miners short course in Dillon starting Monday evening February 12. Dr Eugene B Perry and other School of Mines instructors will lead lectures on mining and prospecting with practical talks on ore deposits and placer mining. A discussion period will follow each lecture.
Beaverhead county high school Smith-Hughes department reports 20 projects in the year under Supervisor Bernard Williams. Net profit $602.19. Sheep five projects 269 head with charges 1963.40 credits 2733.19 profit 769.78 production 212 lambs 2291 pounds wool. Beef five projects 68 head charges 2351.71 credits 1863.62 loss 488.09 production 19 calves. Baby beef one project charges 43.80 credits 44.65 profit .85 production 850 pounds. Lamb fattening two projects.
The Dillon Lyric Quartet with Helen Ballard Carney opened at 10 o clock at Normal College performing three numbers including Morning and The reaction. The quartet features Mrs J C Jeppson soprano Mrs W G Gilbert alto H B Jewett tenor and Dr W I Stephan bass Ralph McFadden directs and accompanies.
Under the mining district American Legion auxiliary the program aired last Sunday evening on KGIR. Listeners enjoyed two piano selections by Genevieve Green and Hazel McGrath of Dillon, taught by Nellie Little.
