Contagious Abortion in Cattle Sparks Montana Concern
In spring 1916 Montana faced record abortion losses among cattle with many calves lost in some areas. Experts attribute some to the harsh winter and poor feed but credit much to contagious abortion. The disease spreads mainly through the cow, with aborting cows becoming carriers and sometimes barren after pregnancy. Measures include isolating aborting cows, daily uterine irrigation, and careful disposal of aborted material. Carbolic acid treatments and herd management are used though not a cure.
