District Governor Uncles urges service and defense cooperation at the Arthur Brown boarding house meeting on South Idaho Street.
Moderation of severe weather easing ice jams on the Beaverhead River is noted this week. Previous dangers were near the highway 91 bridge where the county road was blocked and ranchers carried milk cans to Cantrell Dairy. Ice on Molleur fox farm receded and the stream refilled its channel.
Beaverhead County plans a series of defense meetings January 20 to 23 led by W. W. Hawkins and Bernard Williams. Sessions cover Civilian Defense, Defense Bond Campaign, Agricultural Outlook, Farm Defense and Scrap Iron campaigns with speakers in Dillon Wisdom Lima Armstead Jackson Reichle Wise River. Floyd Kenison distributed notices through Bernard Williams' office.
The Normal Bulldogs beat the Orediggers 47 to 23 in their Montana conference opener on the college court. The game featured a rough 43 personal fouls and a 24 15 halftime lead, with the Normal pep band entertaining between halves.
Alumni of Montana State Normal College showcase works in a week long exhibit at the college gallery. Pieces include watercolors, oils, sculpture, jewelry, weaving, and more with hours Mon-Fri 2-5 pm Tue Thu 7-9 pm Sat 9-12.
At the Rotary club gathering A Er ickson reports on Germany and Berlin unrest, Japan in Malaya, and national tax and debt plans. Theresa Landon describes Philippine geography resources and U S civilizing work, praising maintaining U S influence. Guests included Arthur Reichle Ed Newton and Bernard Harkness.
An overheated flue caused an attic fire at the Homer Pilon house on East Glendale Street last Thursday at noon. Firefighters extinguished the blaze after cutting a hole in the roof. It followed Chief Vandegrift's warning to motorists. Police Chief Patrick said public response was better but not good enough.
Local volunteers John C and James M Paddock brothers of Wise River left last week to take final examinations at the Missoula receiving station. Dillon men Leon R Evans and Oren C Dilley filed Navy enlistment applications. Evans father Leon D a WWI veteran died at Fort Harrison Veterans hospital. Evans helps at Shell Service Station. Two former Normal College students are among 58 Montana men training as 2200 aviation cadets at Corpus Christi Texas. Francis Tonrey and Carl Johansen are the Montana entries. Montana leads in proportion of men at Corpus Christi per staff HQ Thirteenth Naval District Seattle. Montana second in sons commissioned and wings awarded in class of 1941. Charles Selway writes of Pacific patrols after two months with no word. He re-enlisted after four-year hitch. his family has two other sons in the Navy.
At a reorganizational meeting S E Whitworth was elected president succeeding E W Bond. Officers for 1942 include E E Hazel as vice president J W Rees treasurer and J L Mayland secretary. New board members are E E Hazel and Albert Erickson.
Twenty two Beaverhead county men and one transfer were among 112 selectees examined by the traveling army doctors in Butte last Saturday. The list includes 43 from Silver Bow, 22 from Jefferson, and 25 from Gallatin counties. Second Lt. William C. Breen announced that enlistment rules for I A or 1 B classifications have changed, allowing such men to enlist in any branch if it does not hinder regular calls. Beaverhead examinees named include Lee S. Martinell and 20 others plus a transfer from Shakopee, Minn., Lewis P. Skay.
Mining District No 6 representative Bechler led Beaverhead Post at the Montana department mid winter executive meeting in Helena. He carried 17 paid up cards for the post bringing annual total to 107, slightly above quota. The delegation reported Civilian Defense steps with the county defense council as speakers included Charles Wilson of Indianapolis and Mrs E J Goppert, national vice-president of the Auxiliary.
Ed Macfarlane 77 a well known old timer and long time county resident died last night at the State Hospital body brought to Dillon by H M Brundage funeral tentatively set for Friday at 2 o’clock arrangements not completed He had no surviving relatives in this country Born August 3 1864 in London England he went to Canada with a brother then to Boston and west to Montana living 49 years in the county naturalized in Dillon in 1904 He worked for major ranch outfits and was widely known in the area
Mr and Mrs Frank Blair of Grant were seen shopping in Dillon on Monday, matching the pattern of local residents running errands and visiting stores in town.
Dillon subscribers contributed 7350 in United States Defense bonds during a KGIR radio drive last Sunday afternoon. The effort included 26 bond buyers from Dillon and nearby towns as the two and a half hour program ran 2:30 to 4:30 pm. The drive will continue each Sunday afternoon on KGIR and network stations.
About 25 members attended the Beaverhead Wool Pool meeting at the courthouse. John Albers of Dillon and Tom Foley of Armstead were reelected to the board. Parker T. Scott of Armstead was reelected president and Albers secretary treasurer. Scott will attend a state wool pool meeting in Missoula as delegate.
The city council approved a blackout ordinance patterned after coastal cities. It sets an air raid signal of two minute intermittent sounds and an all clear of one minute continuous sound. Penalties apply for noncompliance with wardens enforcing total darkness across 15 zones under A M Jones supervision. Mayor Bert Megquier presided at the session and routines were executed.
In Anaconda last night Central beat Virginia City 28-26 in a tight hoops duel. Beavers overwhelmed Virginia City 42-10 with a fourth quarter surge and baton twirling by the high school program. Two more Beaver games follow this week against Anaconda and Butte high.
The Dillon Ski club plans the official opening of the lighted ski trail at Elkhorn for next Saturday night with a party and dance at Elkhorn lodge. Seventy skiers enjoyed excellent sport on Sunday and a good number visited Saturday afternoon, with numbers expected to grow for the first night under lights.
On January 31 the eighth annual President's Birthday charity ball will be held. C A Bechler, appointed chairman of the county infantile paralysis committee, says all proceeds go to the cause with part sent to the national fund and part kept locally. The slogan is Dance so that others may walk. Arrangements are under way.
