Poindexter and Orr Ranch A Montana Livestock Giant
The Poindexter and Orr company built a vast Montana operation on the Blacktail and Beaverhead valleys. Founded in the 1860s by Orr and Poindexter, it grew into a leading draft horse, sheep, and cattle empire with 16,000 deeded acres, 10,000 sheep, about 6,000 cattle, and a renowned Percheron and Shire horse stock. The firm, now led by Ernest Orr and others, emphasizes disciplined breeding, range management, and strong water rights, with notable ranch houses and a legacy of honesty.
