William E. Jones and Boone Sparrow are Bea Verhead County High School finalists for 1957 merit scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation says 162,000 seniors in 12,500 schools were tested for 700 final awards totaling 3.5 million dollars.

Beaverhead Lab Featured in Farm Journal January Issue

The Beaverhead Laboratory in Southwestern Montana, founded 1954 and dedicated 1955, is profiled in Farm Journal. Ray Anderson’s feature, with photos of John Hoff and Alex Christie, notes ranchers and farmers now test grass, hay and soil locally and learn supplement needs. Dale Metlen credits the lab’s creation to local effort and funding through the Beaverhead Laboratory Foundation.

Montana Boys State operation gains statewide support

The Montana Boys State program at Western Montana College of Education receives continued backing from the Department and committees. Ted Hazelbaker is reappointed director with commendation, and Dillon is named permanent office and bank location. A single office will manage registration and operations, with increased enrollment possible after the new dormitory opens. Jay McCarthy of Dillon elected secretary and treasurer.

Escapee Jailed in Nebraska on Bad Check Charge

George H Heiser alias Jim W Tupper is jailed in Norfolk Nebraska on bad check and forgery charges and escaped from a basement courthouse cell July 29 Heiser aided by a woman who passed bad checks in Dillon and Armstead and is now sought in several Nebraska towns and at least six Montana cities authorities report

Beaverhead Chamber Sets 24th Annual Meeting and Dinner

The Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce will hold its 24th annual meeting and dinner on Thursday January 24 at the Elks Club starting 7:00 p.m. Secretary Marie Gibbons announced. Dr Herbert Steele of Western Montana College of Education will deliver the principal address and Attorney Frank M Davis will be master of ceremonies. The program includes talks by the incoming and outgoing presidents, a review of chamber activities, plans for 1857, and the annual membership drive. Music by Western College of Education students under Prof Ralph McFadden will entertain.

Beaverhead County records show 83 deaths in 1956 with a male majority of 62 to 21. Births totaled 110 with 60 boys and 50 girls, while months and ratios varied, several months recording all male deaths and births showing skewed sex ratios.

Beaverhead Wool Pool Meeting Set for Thursday at Beaverhead HS

Secretary Ed Atkins announced plans for the Beaverhead Wool Pool meeting to be held Thursday January 10 at the high school vocational agricultural building. The program begins 10 30 am with fleece grading and wool judging demonstrations and lunch served at noon.

Beaverhead Soil Conservation District Supervisors set Agricultural Day for Tuesday February 19 at the SCS office in Dillon. The meeting covered program ideas, annual district report, and a 1957 work plan. Participants included Chairman Art Christensen, Lee Martinell, Dusty Sparrow, Emmett Blomquist, Ben Slanger, and County Agent Ed Atkins.

Clemow Elected New Chairman of County Board

The county board of commissioners held its first meeting of the year at the county courthouse through Wednesday. Senior commissioner Tom Clemow of Jackson was elected chairman as the board reorganized. Commissioner John Prohosky began a new six year term, with Ralph Davis of Dillon completing the trio.

Over 300 Vehicle Plates Issued On Busy First Day

More than 300 sets of motor vehicle plates were issued at the office of County Treasurer Martha O. Greene on Wednesday. Car plates went to 198 and truck plates to 113, while older plates show higher cumulative totals for cars, trucks, and trailers.

Damage Suit To Be Tried in Madison

Minn ie Stewart sues Mike Gregovich for 20000 in injuries from a August 17 auto crash near Browne's Bridge north of Glen. Trial moved to Madison County by Judge Philip C. Duncan. Beaverhead and Madison Counties within the Fifth Judicial District. Gregovich faces involuntary manslaughter charge in Beaverhead related to the same crash.
