Argenta Montana mining camp and early smelter history
The Argenta mining camp in Montana's foothills began around 1865, with A Tl Essler erecting Montana's first smelter on the legal tender. The town grew from silver lead ore discoveries, once named Montana City, with voting and population fluctuations linked to silver prices and mining fortunes. Major mines such as Finch and Delphic, along with properties like Golden Mon and Brownell, show long-running shipments and significant ore yields, while modern activity wanes amid litigation and shifting ore grades.
