Brown Nellie the Fastest Horse of Montana’s Early Days
The Sunday Standard recalls Brown Nellie, a famed long distance mare owned by Johnny Stone. In 1868 she and Stone raced Argenta to Bannack and back, covering 30 miles in under two hours to win a legendary contest that drew massive bets and praise from Bannack miners. Nellie later performed tricks in a Montana circus before passing away on the Grasshopper.
