Dillon Lodge No 1554 BPO Elks prepares for the win the war class initiation on March 17 a nationwide ceremony expected to be the largest in the order. Exalted Ruler Homer Faust urges members to sign up candidates to serve the country under national defense efforts. The lodge regular meeting occurred last night at the hall.
Bert Lawrence 62 a Beaverhead County resident and World War II veteran died last Thursday night at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. Born in Denver he served with Company A 20th Engineers in France and later worked as a livestock foreman for Selway Sheep company and J E Selway ranch. Funeral services with military honors were held at the Brundage chapel with Beaverhead Post American Legion escort.
Forty three nominations are listed for the Montana futurity class at the Dillon Hereford show and sale to be held in October. Bernard Williams, secretary, notes last year’s 34 nominations and the 1941 event was a success. Beaverhead stockmen and numerous Montana breeders, including Clemon Bros of Jackson and J. D. Harrison of Polaris, are among those nominating bulls for the futurity.
The council authorized a blinker caution light at Atlantic and Glendale on Highway 91 after a hospital curve installation. It reports street lights at Orr Atlantic and Pacific Sebree and orders sidewalk checks. Police pay rises to 125 dollars a month, rising to 140 with chief recommendation. Mayor Bert Megquier presided with full attendance.
Montana Normal's Bulldogs beat Montana School of Mines 51 to 37 to hold second place in the state college conference. The win tightens the race with Carroll College of Helena for first. Good led Normal with 19 points while Polson paced the Miners with 9.
The Normal Bulldogs face mid season setbacks as star guard John Burgess leaves for the Navy and four more players become unavailable. Dave Aitken and Farrington were sidelined by exams, while Bud Deegan and Thill left school to work. The team, once a game ahead of Carroll College, loses five key players at the height of the season.

In recent days a crew of 28 men re-laid side tracks in the local railroad yards replacing 52-pound rails with 90-pound rails. About 4,000 feet of track were changed to standard heavier rails.
County offices in the courthouse and Dillon banks will be closed all day Thursday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's birthday. Schools will remain open as usual.
J. P. Best Beaverhead county assessor was reelected president of the state assessor group at the annual conclave. Topics included land classifications personal property checks license revenue distribution from trucks by county miles traveled and uniformity of assessments progress praised by the state board of equalization.
In Beaverhead county district court Judge George W. Padbury Jr. sentenced ex-pugilist Tiny Holden to four years for grand larceny related to stolen U S Savings bonds and cash from Jean Labiste. George Pierce, 58, drew one year for a second degree assault after pleading guilty. Bonds and most cash were recovered. a relative had prompted the investigation.
By February 6 city grade school pupils had purchased 1340.85 in defense stamps and bonds with their savings and received gifts totaling 1900, bringing the total to 3240.85. Supt. Paul Anderson of the city schools is named Montana representative on the National Safety Council Teacher Education for Safety committee. A Lincoln's Birthday program is planned for tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the Bagley building with Roy Graves presiding and performances by the training school and kindergarten bands, a pledge, and a musical program.
The Normal College library has been designated to receive complete Bureau of Census publications, including the 1940 census. Enrollment for the second semester shows 164 students, a small drop from 192, with many enrolled in diploma or degree programs to be completed end of year. Dr. Sheldon E. Davis attends a Progressive Education association meeting in Helena. Principal D L Johnson and Miss Fay Kirkpatrick will represent the high school. An assembly at 10 this morning was hosted by the music club.
Mel Jones led the men with top score in the Feb 4 Dillon club shoot. Miss Rimel posted 90 in prone and strong totals across positions as Girls Club vs Blackfoot in Idaho. Boys Junior Rifle scores featured Rott Jones Axe and Nelson with high marks in prone and sitting.
Beaverhead county received 10,952.34 in 1941 from the Montana Power company, up from 4,316.55 in 1940. Local manager E. R. Buck announced the company paid about 1.5 million dollars in taxes to 40 counties with the largest state assessment.
Registration for the third draft in Beaverhead County is scheduled for February 16 1942 with posts in Argenta Nadine Sheridan Banack Polaris Jackson Wise River Armstead Grant Lima Monida Lakeview Dillon and Wise River hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Men aged 20 to 44 must appear at listed locations to fill out cards.
Beaverhead county filled its February draft quota yesterday as nine men departed for Fort Lewis Washington to be inducted into the army. Those leaving yesterday morning were Edwin Bruce McQuiston Elmo W A Pott Roscoe Edward Lyons Kenneth Foster Wetmore George Reed DeWolf Ewald Manderich William Elmer Bjorni Reed Roscoe Smith and Johan Anderson.
Miss Jean Bishop addressed the Rotary Club in China on her extensive travels among major cities and rural areas. She highlighted China’s antiquity, republic shift, Soong family influence, education reform, and ongoing literacy contrasts with Japan, noting wartime disruptions and resilient colleges. Joe White chaired the meeting.
Percy Grainger world famous pianist Sampoe is scheduled to perform at the Normal College auditorium on Monday February 23 at 8 15 pm. He has completed a nationwide tour of 56 engagements in the 1940 41 season and his appearance here offers music lovers a rare treat.
Ernest M. Shafer a prominent Argenta miner died Thursday morning shortly after arriving at Barrett hospital after a period of ill health. Funeral held Monday at Brundage chapel with burial in Mountain View cemetery. Born June 24 1908 in Argenta he studied there Dillon and Butte School of Mines. Survived by wife Vera, his parents, a son Paul and daughter Wanda, seven brothers and four sisters.
The annual Father and Son banquet closes Boy Scout week in Dillon. D. L. Johnson of Beaverhead County High School will speak on Be Prepared. Percy Frazier, retiring Silver Bow Scout executive, also will speak. The program includes group singing, tenderfoot investure, and merit awards.
Dillon Chamber of Commerce officials announce monthly meetings for year to discuss business problems in open forum. Agenda includes blackout regulations, daylight savings adjustments, solicitation and holiday celebrations. Strong response reported to recent membership drive.
Beaverhead sportsmen urged the state fish and game commission to reopen Beaverhead waters for the balance of the season and restore the 1940 winter fishing status. They also recommended upland bird seasons for pheasants from Sept. 13 one day and a Nov. 8 to Dec. 6 season, an goats season Oct. 15 to Nov. 15, and a bear season Oct. 15 to June 1, with deer and elk unchanged.
