Big Hole dam powers Butte as 2000 HP plant opens
The Montana Power Transmission company on the Big Hole river near Divide is now delivering power to Butte. Two 1000 horse power generators drive turbines with a 2000 HP output and a plan to add more wheels and generators to reach 5000 HP. The new plant uses a six copper wire system and step up transformers to 15000 volts for transmission to the south side of Butte, with a Wise River storage reservoir backing the system for drought.
