Death of Mrs Ida E Best at Barrett Hospital

Dillon loses a long serving civic figure Ida E Best 82 died after a fall and illness at Barrett Hospital. Born in Kalamazoo County Michigan she moved to Dillon with husband O M Best in 1885. Survived by two sons Jud P Best and H F Best, sister Jette Lawrence, brother H H Pierce, and several grandchildren. Interment details follow.

Dr Davis Speaks on Guessing in 1941 to Butte Club

Dr Sheldon E. Davis addressed the Butte Rotary Club at the Finlen hotel last Thursday on Guessing in 1941. The speaker touted conjecture as a hallmark of the year and noted this marked his fifth consecutive year reviewing current events for the club.

Bulldogs Tour of the Northwest Shows Team Ready

Keefer suffers eye injury while chopping wood at Wise River mine. He was treated by Dr. W. H. Stephan after being brought to Butte by Deputy Sheriff Boyd Quick. Normal College Bull dogs went 4-3 on a Northwest road trip with wins over Ricks College and North Western Nazarene and losses to College of Idaho Whitman Puget Sound Idaho Teachers.

Dillon Adopts Star Route Mail Service

Dillon switches to star route daily mail delivery except Sundays replacing passenger trains 80 and 31 cancelled last Sunday. Star route leaves Butte at noon, arrives Dillon 2 pm, departs 5 30 pm for Butte arrival 7 30 pm. Remaining trains No 29 at 6 55 am and 32 at 8 35 pm unchanged. Christmas mail volume average, defense bonds sales over 18000 in first 20 days, about 1000 daily.

Certificates Awarded for Red Cross Swimming Courses

Red Cross swimming courses were conducted this fall with certificates awarded in three levels. Beginners include Janet Bridenstein, Dolores Davis, Kinnette Kenison, Lois Lacry, Dorothy Seybold, Helen Swaim, June Waldemar, Mary Ellen White, Robert Cardinale, Luther French, Donald Fairbank, Bobby Hillstead, Sammy Davis, Phil Nightingale, and Vaughn Evans. Intermediate recipients include Janet Bridenstein, Donna Carrigan, Beverly Carver, Patricia Carrigan, Marjorie Pettit, Roberta Paddock. Swimming certificates went to Beverly Carver, Arlene Connellly, Mary Connellly, Jean Hillstead, Maybelle Paddock, Christine Zugal, Benny Davis. Girls courses were taught by Florence M. Hellman and boys directed by Don Wheat.

Tuberculin Test Results Reported for Dillon and Lima Students

County Nurse Margaret Holloran reports tuberculin tests across Dillon and Lima school groups found very few positives. In Dillon 219 tests among 7th to 8th grade students yielded 12 positives, among 100 high school students six positives, while Lima tested 46 students with no positives.

Henry Van Dome Called by Reaper

Funeral rites for Henry Van Dome a 65 year old ranch worker were held at Brun dage chapel with Rev. W G Lewis officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View cemetery. Coroner Raymond Schwartz ruled death from natural causes with time of death Monday night. He was a well known ranch hand in the area.

Girl Scouts meet at city hall this afternoon at four join carol groups. They will visit Dil lon stores to sing from four to six o clock.

Rotary Club Hears Report On Red Cross Drive

Rotary President E. E. Hazel presided as Joe White reported on Dillon’s strong Red Cross drive last Sunday. Al Erickson reviewed world events, noting Hong Kong’s fall, British withdrawal toward Singapore, and Japan’s Luzon attempts. News of Axis defeats in Libya and American progress against Japan followed. Vernon Taylor played violin with Mrs. Taylor at piano, featuring works by Soro, Tchaikovsky, Kreisler, Heins, and American tunes. Rev. W. G. Lewis gave a Christmas message urging Christian spirit, and the meeting closed with carols led by Ralph Stowell and piano by Ralph McFadden.

Well-known rancher Nels P Nelson dies at Dillon ranch

Nels P Nelson, respected Bea verhead valley rancher, died at his Dillon area ranch after three years of ill health following a paralytic stroke. A Danish immigrant born May 16 1879 he was 62. He leaves daughter Okal who has left for Mayo Clinic Rochester. Funeral plans await her return. body at Brundage funeral home.

Matron Shanholtzer Dies Suddenly at Ranch Home

Mrs. Mabel Shanholtzer, 52, wife of J. O. Shanholtzer, prominent Centennial valley rancher, died suddenly at the family home after a day of routine duties. Born November 27, 1889 in Eldorado Springs Missouri, she married in 1908 in Nevada Missouri and had nine children. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Monday at Brundage chapel with Rev. J. A. Meeke officiating if available.

Beaverhead Residents Rally For Red Cross War Relief

Dillon and Beaverhead county residents donated well above the $1400 goal for the Red Cross war relief drive. By Monday afternoon receipts reached 2467.78 with Dillon, Wisdom, Jackson, and Armstead contributing amounts. volunteers used a phone bank and canvassing to extend the reach despite heavy snow.

Truck overturns on Berg Christensen curve after skid

A beer truck overturned on a slick Berg Christensen curve this morning after a light car skidded, causing the big vehicle to swerve. No injuries reported and the load was transferred to a Wellborn truck until the overturned unit could be righted.
