Horse Hedgest and Bear Attack Rescue in Frontiers Tale
In October 1865 Cornelius Hedges with General Meagher and companions crossed into hostile terrain seeking a Blackfeet treaty. After blizzards and hunger they reached Sun River mission, then Fort Benton, where Hedges narrowly escaped wolves and river rapids thanks to his horse. On the return trip a night lost on the trail ended when a bear attacked a camp, a gun battle ensued, and a hidden cache of five hundred dollars was found in the bear’s den before burial of the bones after Christmas.
