Jenetaro Neishi a longtime railroad foreman at Barratts died of a heart attack at home Saturday evening. Born January 10 1882 in Hiroshima he came to the United States in 1900 and worked for the Oregon Short Line before settling in Beaverhead County in 1911. He is survived by his widow five children and a brother. funeral was held at Brundage chapel and the body shipped to Salt Lake for cremation.
Dirk Holcomb, once of Dillon, spent Saturday on a business visit in Dillon while residing at Livingston.
Sheriff Paul Temple asks gun owners to register firearms for potential emergency use. He seeks 12 gauge pump shotguns and automatic shotguns, pistols and revolvers of .25 to .82 caliber, and rifles of .25 to .35 caliber, with assurances to return items after the emergency.
Dillon officials adopt a new two dollar poor fund poll tax to be collected with the first property assessment next year. About 1,800 people are affected. County boards receive appointments for fair, examination, and high school duties. Licenses for distant liquor establishments set at fifty dollars for 1942 with half-year rates after July 1. Tax deeds to be pursued for delinquent properties.
Montana farmers and stockmen are urged to increase beef and veal marketings 18 percent in 1942 over 1940 levels to curb rising cattle numbers. Beaverhead county producers are asked to raise marketings 27 percent, aiding range conservation and a healthier long term market outlook.
The Montana Tuberculosis association reports 1940 progress with 451 new cases last year and 225 deaths down from 239 in 1939. A shooting accident injures Paul Holloran near the shoulder after a loaded .22 rifle discharged during target practice. He is hospitalized in satisfactory condition at Barrett hospital. Beaver high school beat Sheridan 36-14, leading 15-2 after one period and 28-6 at halftime. Madison led Sheridan with five points. Beaver plays Deer Lodge next at home Friday.
Harry Bay youngest son of Mr and Mrs Chris Bay was discharged from Anaconda hospital last week after an appendectomy.
Veterans of World War I plan a county wide citizens defense committee with the Beaverhead Post meeting at the Metlen hotel tomorrow at 8 pm. W. W Hawkins chairs the county defense council and George M. Gosman and Sheriff Paul Temple will speak on community defense plans including air raid warnings first aid and safety patrols. The effort will involve fire departments civic clubs and other groups in forming organized emergency response teams.
Beav erhead county draft board last week 1-A reclassifications made for immediate military service include Bryan Dee Bour and Marvin W Bour. Other changes decked 1-H 2-A 3-A and 4-E with names listed and the board notified to furnish 14 draftees for induction on January 22.
Frank Stine was sentenced to five years in state prison after pleading guilty to a statutory charge before Judge H G Rodg ers in district court last Thursday. The 42 year old welfare worker was arrested by officers Ward and Johnson after alleged attempts to attack a young girl Wednesday night. He had lived here since 1912.
Anthony Ferko stopped in Dillon to visit his parents Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Ferko. He was en route from Fort Collins Colorado where he recently graduated a technical course and will be employed at a Seattle airport.
Under County Nurse Miss Margaret Holloran tuberculosis tests were given to Dillon High School freshmen and seniors as well as seventh and eighth graders at the training school yesterday and today. The Montana Tuberculosis Association with the State Board of Health supervises this effort. next Monday Lima grade and high school students will be tested. Positive cases will be X-rayed January 15, and families with reactors are urged to be tested. Previously only Dillon and Lima high schools were included.
Colored Christmas light clusters are being placed on light posts in the business district. Commissioner Patrick said street decorations will be completed and the lights turned on next Monday. Flooding work continues, but the first ice has formed at the new municipal rink and skaters are in the limbering stage.
Mrs. Fred Moore returned from Glendale California where she spent two months visiting her son Bud and other relatives.
Beaverhead Red Cross chair Lee R. Light was tasked to raise 1400 for armed forces relief and civilian aid. A telegram from National Chairman Norman H. Davis notified the call. Donations can be left at Dillon banks as county residents anticipate strong support.
Radio reports hint at a broad draft reshuffle and possible reclassification of uncalled registrants but no official notice or reservist call has arrived. Sheriff Temple and Police Chief Patrick have been asked about extra manpower for a Montana state unit. Five youths reportedly sought Navy enlistment at the post office, and a 65 year old man sought help to join the service citing fitness and willingness to fight.
Beaverhead National Forest issued annual grazing permits in Wise River Wisdom and Jackson. W. B. Willey and Chet Jackson oversaw approvals for cattle and horses and sheep totals at each site. Remaining permits for the forest will be approved early February with notices sent to stockmen in Dillon Lima Sheridan and Madison districts.
