Missoula Founding Amid Early Montana Frontiers

The Bitter Root valley becomes a cradle of white settlement as Jesuits led by DeSmet and later Captains Higgins and McCormick help establish Missoula Mills. Early travel by Lewis and Clark, fur traders, and the Hudson’s Bay Company shape the region before 1860. St. Marys mission, Blackfeet conflicts, and the Cantonment Stevens era set the stage for Missoula’s growth and the first white marriage in 1862.
