James Quail a Silver Creek placer miner was killed in August 1869 during a raid aimed at a horse herd near Silver City. The subsequent U S Army action on the Marias river in January 1870 led to a mass killing of Indians under Mountain Chief, Heavy Runner, and Piegan bands, amid smallpox illness and confusion, with few guilty brought to justice. Clarke’s ties to the fur trade and West Point, and Quail’s associates Cruse and Meager figure in Montana mining history, alongside local figures like Don Becker. Nellie Clarke, Malcolm’s daughter, later served as Lewis and Clark county school superintendent.
