Montana Farmers Near Victory Gaps In Milk And Sugar Beets
Statewide study by Montana agricultural committees finds most areas expect to meet or exceed production goals for livestock grain and field crops to support war needs. Milk and sugar beets repeatedly show shortfalls due to labor and grazing shortages, with several areas forecasting milk, eggs, or sugar beet goals unmet or only partly met.

Missoula May Get Mines Lab In War Era Plan
United States Bureau of Mines may establish a 500000 dollar mining laboratory in Missoula to serve the northwest. A J Mosby of the Western Montana Mine Owners and Operators Association says site approval is not final but favorable, with about 100 engineers to staff the lab and location urged due to proximity to regional mineral resources. A 10 point resolution seeking support for small operators and strategic minerals was approved for delivery to Montana's congressional delegation. Pineapple picking continues year round in Hawaii.

War Manpower Committee weighs student subsidy for higher education
A special War Manpower Committee proposal would subsidize college costs to ensure enough officers and trained personnel for the war effort. Educators warn a subsidy may be needed to prevent a 30 percent drop in college enrollments, with Congress required for funding. Women students could be included, echoing World War I programs that enrolled about 185,000 students in three months of 1918.
