Opening of Flathead Lands Echoes 1889 Oklahoma Rush
A Missoula attorney recalls the 1889 Oklahoma land rush when fifty to sixty thousand people flocked to claim plots. Sooners hid in tepees and brush while a signal gun fired to start the scramble. The piece contrasts police, federal troops, and chaotic scenes with later openings in the Rosebud and Flathead areas and notes the 1908 1909 registrations and draws at Dallas O Neill Valentine and Chamberlain.
