A massive explosion destroyed the French battleship Liberte in Toulon harbor early Monday. The blast and subsequent fires killed 350 to 500 sailors, with many bodies hurled into the water or buried in wreckage as the ship disintegrated.
Panic spread as a submarine blast or fire swept the Liberte. Hundreds of crewmen—300 to 340 from the Liberte and about 100 from assisting warships—were lost or injured in the blaze and smoke. The Republique suffered hull damage when armour plate from the Liberte struck her port side. The Democratic party reported twenty dead and fifty injured in the incident.
Superintendent J A Haig and his wife Necla Buck of Starkweather left for Calgary Canada. Their ill brother Tom Haig, an early county settler held in high esteem, remains gravely ill with doctors having abandoned hope. Tom came in 1883 married here and left in 1902. He lived in Charlesholm Alberta running Haig Perry real estate and a music store.
Governor Burke announced Monday the appointment of North Dakota delegates to national meetings and conventions. Names include J A Haig Devils Lake, George A Russ Jr Bismarck, J C Anderson Wilton, M Murphy Jamestown, A J Volkmann Fessenden, W P Houghton Cooperstown, J A Hoghaug Devil Lake for the State Supervisors of State Banks meeting in New Orleans November 20. An electric railway between Devils Lake jetty Greenwood and Chautauqua appears assured for next season. Plans, cost data, and a conference with R F McDoughall of St Paul for Alnels Steel Construction Co are in progress. The route parallels the current steam line from the Great Northern depot through the city, toward Chautauqua and Greenwood, with a Ramsey county fair and racing association project tied to the new line. North Dakota W. G. U. officers were reelected at Jamestown during the annual convention. President Mrs Preston Anderson of Valley City led the list with vice president Necia Buck Starkweather and recording secretary Florante B Connors Minot. Georgia Chambers Churchs Ferry reported forty nine new members and several unions formed. George H Wilder Grand Forks business leader attended to firm affairs.
Mrs Minnie LaMoure wife of Senator Judson LaMoure of Pembina North Dakota died at their summer home near Brainerd Minnesota after two years of ill health. Funeral in Pembina attended by Eastern Star members and state leaders. Surviving children and husband mourn the loss of a cultured gracious woman.
A terrible accident at Scofield farm near Minot on Monday left Lewis Thompson, an elderly resident of North Dakota, severely burned while operating a steam glow device and attempting to fill the gasoline tank.
Mr. Thompson, aged 46, died several hours after an explosion showered him with oil while machinery operated in Minot. He moved to Minot from Grand Forks in 1906 amid a creamery career. Survived by wife and four children Taylor Ernest Helen and Grant, with his father living in Northome Minn and a brother K Thompson in Grand Forks.
