Thousands fill grounds for a lively fair opening featuring fine stock displays, bustling exhibitors, and intact grand stand activity. Miss Echles and Miss Poole showcase horses while judges and carpenters finish stalls, with cattle and racing stock drawing keen attention from locals and guests.
The North Dakota Territorial Fair near Grand Forks showcased a diverse horse lineup led by Wilcox and Liggett from Benson Minnesota a draft stallion and a range of mares colts and three year olds from Devils Lake Jamoa Mathews of Larimore and T Walker of Devils Lake among others. Ramsay Stephen Minnesota entered Strathnairn a Scottish eight year old Clydesdale plus Braggart a Suffolk stallion and Mask an English Shire stallion all imported in 1882. The fair featured vigorous horticultural displays and a notable potato exhibit, with a cross display of farm produce including milk butter eggs and a large pumpkin. A horse and pony race concluded with Spot, Fifteen, and Black Bird among top finishers as people admired livestock and vegetables alike.
Crowds from Minot, Towner, Bottineau and beyond filled the grounds as trains arrived from Crookston and east. A ladies race between Miss Eckles of Minnesota and Miss Poole of Mouse River drew cheers, while stock and vegetables drew admiration. An accident injured an elderly woman in the dust, and the day ended with keen racing and crowd excitement.
