Treaty Opens Unallotted Sioux Lands at Fort Totten
After years of effort by government commissioners, Major James McLaughlin and Senator Hansbrough secure a treaty with Wahpeton Sisseton and Cuthead Sioux chiefs to sell unallotted lands on the Fort Totten reservation. Congress must ratify, with Devils Lake expecting a 5000 person rush when opened. The land, about 100000 acres, lies across the lake and will be opened following ratification in the coming winter.
