North Dakota praise for rail rates and growth at Senate hearing
James J. Hill of the Great Northern told the Senate Committee on Inter-State Commerce that railroads spurred settlement and traffic. He cited 1882 1,000 miles moving 1,007,000 tons and 1908 5,598 miles moving 16,148,000 tons, with freight rates dropping from about 2.52 cents to 0.857 cent per ton mile, arguing lower rates follow increased efficiency and population growth.
