A Coal Mine Horror in Victoria British Columbia
A deadly explosion tore through No 1 shaft of the Victoria Coal Company mine at 6 pm. About 150 workers were believed trapped as rescue teams battled fire and dense smoke. By midnight twelve bodies were recovered, many fatally burned. A rescue party went down but could not advance. One rescuer, B. Midon, died after emerging. A special train with surgeons arrived from Victoria at 2 am. The mine remains on fire and conditions around the shaft are dire.
