The Sheils bill in Bismarck restricts liquor sales by druggists, imposes an emergency clause, raises signature requirements to seventy percent of local voters, and adds residence data on applications. It caps daily liquor sales at a half pint and creates spotter enforcement with a $50 bounty for information leading to convictions.
Jas G Chandler of the Burglar and the Waif Co. visits Fargo greeting old friends. A son of a famed ex secretary of the navy he earlier held a Yankton land office post and served in Fargo’s first military encampment. Chandler, author of Dazey in Barnes County’s namesake town, recalls early territorial days.
The Lewis bill approved by the governor establishes a state pure food law to prevent sale of doctored or adulterated food and drink. It authorizes $1,500 annually for experiments at Fargo enabling analyses of contested products, with sheriffs and deputies designated as enforcement agents.
A new law enables purchases for analysis at the state experiment station to curb adulterated foods with results published in county papers. Citizens may submit samples for prosecution if impure. Land Man Powell notes high demand for city property and over ten residences changing hands, while railroad families move from Larimore to Devils Lake April first.
