Convention Opens as Thurston Leads Republican Gathering
June 19 opening of the 1888 Republican convention with Chairman Jones presiding. Rev Frank W Gunsaules led in prayer, J B Thurston named temporary chairman delivering a strong speech supporting Blaine. Applause greeted references to candidates and attack on the Democratic administration. Officers announced, gavel presented, and a procession of committee calls began as Dakota and Washington votes were debated. McKinley then took the platform.
