Convict in North Carolina Invents Safer Rail System
Carl Olson, serving life in a state penitentiary, devised a reversible steel rail to prevent railroad accidents by balancing wear on both sides. The idea, once supported by former warden Hellstrom, is patented in multiple countries and led to a new American Safety Steel Rail company with executives including F J Hiltner and K G Patterson. The first rails will be produced in Gary Indiana and tested on the B&O line near Bis Mack.
