A Parson's Story Rediscovered in Gold Camp Tale
The narrative by T. De Witt Bowen recalls a perilous trek during the gold rush era. An ordained Episcopal clergyman travels ten miles to a mining camp to raise funds and found a church. A disguised assailant menaces him with a revolver, orders him to strip, binds his wrists with a lariat, and attempts to impersonate him at Palmer Gulch. Bowen frees himself by lighting dry grass to burn the cords, escapes unarmed, and pursues the antagonist toward Acme camp while guarding against mistaken identity.

Humorous Snippets Highlight Social Ashes and Missteps
A pasted collage of light anecdotes from a social circle features a shy single woman at a meeting described as homely, a church sermon with faltering mercy, a clever unwashed lament, a society youth’s ignorance of history, and a jokey Knights of the Bath miscue. It closes noting a congested railroad bill amid brisk retail chatter at the New York Cash Store.
