The Barry defense will seek a jury verdict at Grafton on Friday after Dr Sweeney testified in the earlier trial that William Barry was insane at the time of Andrew Mellén’s death. The state has presented numerous witnesses asserting Barry’s sanity.
The record notes testimony from Harvey Farnham cashier at Bank of Milton and others who rebut defense claims of Barry’s insanity after he killed Andrew Mellem on January 8, 1901. Shortly before noon J C Garner rushed into the Optic composing room and fired at Stewart Hood, a compositor. The bullet missed and they grappled. Garner was overpowered and taken to the stackup by Sheriff Scofield. Hood and Mrs Garner deny the accusation of ruined life by relations with Garner. Garner appeared intoxicated.

The sale of Chautauqua privileges included items sold to William Halger sen for 20 dollars covering shell and jewelry manufacture and 25 dollars for shooting galley, 85 dollars for natural history specimens, newspapers and periodicals to James Brennan and Johnie Cowan for 40 dollars, and laundry to D. B. Thompson for 5 dollars.
