Widespread weeds reduce grain yields by stealing moisture and nutrients. After harvest, they continue to drain moisture, leaving soil too dry to plow. Disc as soon as possible, rotate crops with corn and clover every four to five years, apply stable manure for humus, and plow under green crops to boost yields and moisture retention, according to agricultural writer W Palmer from North Dakota Agricultural College.
