A large fire in Stoughton Wisconsin destroyed ten of thirty six stores and warehouses plus the Milwaukee and St Paul depot and twenty freight cars laden with wheat and merchandise. Loss estimated from half a million to a million dollars. Cause believed to be an incendiary or tramp-caused fire in an old hay press used as a box factory.
A list of names and notes appears in a fragmentary notice from Devilsake, De P, with instructions about uncalled letters and advertisements. Names include Averill Mills, Amsden, Anderson, Downing, Gilbertson, Hibbard, Tagua, Light, Martinson, Miller, Regan, Stackpoole, Stuart, Thorson, Trobridge, Wilson, and others. A quoted exchange about a poet’s print desire and a joke about buying a typewriter appears among the scraps from Philadelphia Call and Spring Poet.
In a staged trick by Sloan, Puffer and Gambol are pranked in the Leader office to swap notes during a noon visit. The gag backfires when Puffer mocks the deception, revealing his own deafness and prompting Gambol to join in with humor about language and letters, ending with Sloan’s disappearance.
