Sheriff Pitts of Towner county brought Carl M. Olson to Devils Lake in custody and jailed him for safekeeping. On May 27 Paul Peterson a bachelor on his claim near Balfour was murdered. His body was found weeks later covered with hay and he had been struck by an axe. Olson was seen at Petersons house that day. Peterson owned five horses that disappeared the day of the crime, suggesting robbery.

The state militia held its most successful Rock Island encampment, with Major Andrus inspecting and Governor White praising the troops. Major Frame led the best drilled battalion, and a 70 mile march to the city completed in 1 hour 40 minutes. A new northwest range, built under Lt. Love, cost 1000 dollars, drew remarks from visitors.
