Fargo Fire Destroys Edward Block One Day After Holidays
The Fargo blaze started at 3 15 p m in the Golden Rule basement owned by Elsinger & Co among stored toys and spread to the rafters. The fire caused an estimated loss of 175 000 to 200 000 with the 64 000 building two years old and 30 offices plus 15 apartments rendered ruined. Firefighters from Fargo Moorhead and Casselton aided, while Arthur Bassett and Clark Haggart were injured.

Lignite Briquettes Tested as Coal Substitute in Rail Locomotive
A practical test at Soo shops Shoreham compared lignite briquettes with soft coal on a 17 by 24 inch wheel engine climbing a 66 foot grade. Dr R J Schimper’s briquettes, made from ground lignite and a secret chemical process, performed well, producing heat units near or above anthracite with less ash and smoke. The trial used 1 800 pounds of briquettes for about twenty miles, maintaining steam pressure at 150 pounds and leaving the firebox free of clinkers.
