Cyclone Raze Mt Vernon IL Wrecks Town Killing 35
A cyclone struck Mt Vernon Illinois February 20 1900 at 440 PM tearing a 500 yard wide path through the center. It destroyed nearly three hundred homes and businesses and left twelve to fifteen hundred people homeless. Thirty five were killed and about three hundred injured. Fire followed the wind as crews and neighbors battled blazes with help from Centralia Nashville and Evansville. The massive courthouse and other buildings were razed with many buried in the debris. The disaster left extensive property damage with government aid sought from nearby towns.
