A first person tale recounts how a prisoner at Morro Castle during the Spanish American War avoided recapture by gambling with his jailer Campanoni. He won time, crafted a plan using loaded dice and a lead pipe, and bribed his captor with a thousand dollar check after a tense poker dice game. He then escaped and waited to confront the captain who had captured him.
