North Dakota merchants show a clean sweep of year 1901 balances, paying this year's purchases and nearly wiping out balances from 1900. The Red River valley faced its harshest crop year, with flax supporting western trade, yet the state posted strong payments and steady goods handling in the past six months.
The western North Dakota region shines with a big flax and wheat crop, drawing thousands of settlers and proving opportunities for capitalists in a region where the Red River valley lags. Senator La Moure reportedly comments on political matters but hints at a chilly April ahead.

The fifteenth annual North Dakota Educational Association meets at Grand Forks January 1 to 2, 1902 with sessions for county superintendents, college and Normal sections, high school council, Elementary section, and general sessions. Dr Andrew Draper, president, to attend Thursday evening January 2.
The University of Illinois will lecture under the association on The Element of Inspiration in the Schools. All graded and high schools may exhibit regular work and pupil drawings from the past year. Teachers get reduced hotel rates and railroads offer one and one third fare. Ram sey county urged to send a large delegation.
