Devils Lake City Council Adopts Ward Ordinance No 1

The city council met Monday with Aldermen Chamberlin Mann Shanley Maloney Jenks Cleveland plus the mayor and auditor. They approved minutes, paid street lamp oil, and adjusted seals. A report on street lighting was adopted, and a plan to divide the city into wards under Ordinance No 1 passed second reading. A later motion called for a Young Ordinance and housing of coal, with adjournment to Friday. New county board business included courthouse completion extended to Feb 1 1888 and rent terms for a new court house. Imported horses were showcased by Thompson Walker with Percheron stallion Vert Gallant and two mares, claimed among county’s best.

Saved by the Serpent on the Narrows Ice Escape

Frank Palmer of Fort Totten endured a deadly ice breakup crossing to Devils Lake when his team and buggy rode a floating ice floe. A sea serpent attacked and nearly doomed him, but Palmer fought back with a tomahawk and duty to land, cutting the serpent’s tail and escaping to safety. He then reached Devils Lake town, amid other local notes.
