Fire Sweeps Devils Lake In Twin Burnings of 1900
A historic blaze in Devils Lake on April 20 1900 produced a sequence of fires over twelve hours. Start at Pierce’s large livery barn, then Reid’s hotel, culminating with the Tower House and LaRue Miller mill area alight. The town fought the inferno with hose lines, bucket brigades, and exchanges of animal stock, saving several homes and businesses but losing the barn, mill, and multiple structures. Numerous residents aided neighbors as flames raced across dry weeds propelled by a southeast wind and sparked additional fires nearby.
