Saltwater Intrusion Threats Inland Florida Water Supply
Saltwater intrusion remains a constant danger to Florida’s groundwater relied upon by about 90 percent of industrial and domestic needs. With 70 percent of residents in coastal zones, coastal development pressures threaten fresh aquifers as rainfall-sourced groundwater naturally flows toward the ocean, creating inland pressure that holds back saltwater.
Salinity intrusion index aids Florida coastal planning
Florida Sea Grant reports a salinity intrusion index from a recent study. The index models freshwater and saltwater interfaces along the coast, factoring in aquifer boundaries and diffusion to map a five mile belt of sensitivity. It guides developers to avoid high risk areas and supports continued growth with resource-aware management.

Continental Telephone Gains Rate Increases in Florida
The Florida Public Service Commission granted Continental Telephone Company rate increases totaling 325 000 annually, effective Sept. 27, for service in South Walton County with a 10.45 percent return on investment. The hike is 713 494 less than requested in April 1982, when the goal was 1.03 million. Jeff McGehee said the decision is disappointing but that the company will study its earnings impact as a heavy construction program continues. Some local monthly charges rise, while others fall based on leased sets. rent for business system equipment also grows, with a new option to purchase equipment. Service connection charges rise to 53.00, and Directory Assistance remains free. Continental emphasizes continued commitment to high quality service.
