Henderson Beach sale blamed on auditor report pickup

An auditor general report charges state appraisals of Henderson Beach were too high and the land's seller calls it an attempt at publicity. Barney Henderson, who sold 208 acres for 13.1 million, says the price was underpriced and the land would have higher value to a developer, though he would not have sold for development. State appraisals ranged from 12.8 to 16 million, with the DNR agreeing on 13.1 million after averaging the two low values. The report notes deed restrictions reduced market value, as Henderson intended park use. Ellison says DNR Director Gissendaner briefed Governor Graham and the Cabinet before the October 1982 purchase.
