County Drops Police Standard for Okaloosa Officer
Okaloosa County commissioners decide to waive Florida Police Standards for the environmental control officer post after only two of nine applicants had qualifying training. Destin native Sgt. Ray MacGrogan declined the $10,500 yearly job and John Laird, a sheriff's deputy, missed interviews and calls. The plan: hire with reduced requirements and enroll the winner in the first police standards class next January at Okaloosa Walton Junior College. The officer will still hold law enforcement certification. The board approved revised qualifications and will fund schooling.

Weakened fish conditions blamed for Destin harbor kill
State biologist Bill Young of the Department of Environmental Regulations says the recent fish kill in Destin harbor and Old Pass Lagoon stems from weakened fish after previous kills. He notes water tests show no clear DO failure, but plankton blooms bacteria and parasites may worsen the event, with monitoring ongoing and calls to enforce pollution bans.
