South Walton backs fire district creation in straw vote
South Walton County voters backed a fire tax district by 325 to 198 with Point Washington the only precinct to vote against. Santa Rosa Beach and Miramar Beach favored the measure 161 to 63 and 87 to 38 respectively, while 77 to 97 opposed in Point Washington. If approved by the county commission the district would span south of the bay from the Okaloosa to Bay lines, led by Walton County Fire Chief's Association. Santa Rosa Fire Chief Jim Anthony says formation could lower insurance ratings and enable two new fire stations at Miramar Beach and Point Washington, aided by grants. In statewide races, incumbent Lawton Chiles lost to Van B. Poole 338 to 278 and Agriculture Commissioner Doyle Conner defeated Barbara Lindsay 287 to 317. Four Incumbents Return To Board In Destin Race
Destin voters re-elected four current fire district commissioners while veteran Howard Horn lost to Joy Dunlap. Top vote-getter Danny Woodward led with 844 votes, followed by Zack Brunson 771 Bill Burleson 698 Dunlap 681 and Joel Adler 653. Horn had 650 votes. Woodward and Brunson noted progress on equipment for Holiday Isle as Dunlap prepared to join the board. Woodward Brunson and Burleson take four-year terms. Dunlap and Adler take two-year terms after a legislative fix reestablished the district approved in the September primary.
