Runnels Urges Funding For Northwest Coast Plan Endorsed

Gov Bob Graham and the Cabinet backed the Northwest Florida Coast Resource Planning and Management Plan after Davage Runnels urged funding. Dr John DeGrove praised the 90 page plan for Okaloosa and Walton counties, saying it surpasses current state proposals and positions the coast to meet new rules. Runnels stressed local involvement and multi level funding to ensure the plan works, noting developers also helped shape it.

City To Get A Second Voting Precinct

Okaloosa County will split the single Destin precinct, creating a second polling place at First United Methodist Church on Beach Drive for residents east of Beach Drive to the Walton County line including Holiday Isle. Voters west of Stahlman Avenue will stay at Destin Community Center.

Revenue Bill Goes To House

An aide to Rep. James Ward said two Destin bills, including a measure to add the Destin Fire Control District ad valorem tax levy to the City of Destin for state revenue sharing, were sent to the House floor for a Thursday vote. The bills, assigned HB 1400, would set 1984 as the base year for the 3 mill equivalent needed for revenue sharing and would require the city to generate the required tax equivalent despite a 2 mill charter limit.

DWU Manager Vows To Clamp Down On Water Thefts

Destin Water Users manager Eric Smith warns residents of illegal taps into water lines and heat pump discharges into sewers. He cites hundreds stealing water, mainly in Indian Bayou, with potential water shutoffs and restitution demands to recover losses, estimated at about 10 million gallons monthly. The policy will raise rates to cover costs borne by compliant customers. The utility investigates fire lines and other theft methods.

Destin Rotary Sends Autoclave To African Clinic

Destin veterinarian Jim Brechin donates his 38-pound autoclave to a small hospital in Zambia after reading a Rotary International letter. Brechin covers postage of $53.30 to ship from Destin to Mansa Rotary Club, replacing a former unit used since 1977.
