Ocean Year highlights Southeast fishing impact and goals
The Year of the Ocean observance begins March 10 to raise public awareness of oceans and their use. Southeast region emphasizes fishing's economic role with 1983 landings of 2.5 billion pounds valued at 600 million dollars, comprising 43 percent of U.S. landings. Recreational fishing also boosts the Southeast economy, with 9 million anglers in 1980 and 48 million trips producing 3.3 billion in direct and indirect spending. The region holds major estuarine habitat, supplying over 90 percent of commercial yield and over 70 percent of recreational catch is estuarine dependent.
