Charter Says No Tax On Barrier Island Area
The charter committee of Citizens for Incorporation Inc proposes boundaries for Destin excluding barrier islands from city taxation. Eastern and western lines follow the Okaloosa Walon county line and East Pass with shorelines along Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf. Undeveloped land within the Coastal Barrier Resource Act would have zero ad valorem tax, unless Moreno Point is removed, subdivided, or developed.

Aeration plan for Old Pass Lagoon hits pollution alarm
A test run on a proposed aeration system at Old Pass Lagoon shows bubbles help turbidity and oxygen but do not curb dangerously high biochemical oxygen demand. State biologist Jess Van Dyke warns Sandpiper Cove faces serious trouble with potential fish kills unless groundwater nutrients from Destin Water Users’ ponds are addressed. NWFWMD and DNR approvals edge toward installing a system, with a pause in aerator use for calibration.

Study Tracks Nutrient Flow From Destin Ponds to Harbor
Northwest Florida water experts began phase two of a study to determine if nutrients from the pere ponds enter Destin Harbor via Old Pass Lagoon. Two dozen wells were added after 14 initial sites showed potential water flow toward the lagoon. Tests in March will assess nitrate and phosphate levels and quantify any impact on harbor pollution and the algae bloom.
