Hank Christen of Mary Esther, 41, named 911 coordinator for Okaloosa County. The former Atlanta Fire Department battalion chief will earn 18,595 dollars annually. Christen, praised as an emergency communications expert, started work Wednesday as the 911 system is projected to begin operations in about 18 months.
Destin Harbor reserve squadron invites interested persons to an organizational meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at Destin City Hall. Gov. Martinez's one-cent sales tax proposal in the 1987-88 budget faces a bleak path in Okaloosa County due to voters' tax aversion. If approved by Legislature, the tax would require a county referendum to fund capital projects like a new jail, courthouse expansion, and Shalimar Annex, with estimated gains of about $11.6 million. County officials note current state revenue of just over $3 million and stress the need for funds for storm drainage, roads, and waste facilities.
Destin Harbor Board urges city council to seek 2 million dollars from the state Legislature for a buried 1200 foot Gulf water pipeline to flush Old Pass. The plan would push water under Holiday Isle into Sandpiper Cove canal at 50 000 gallons per minute, with 10 000 dollars annual maintenance.
The Board forwarded a plan to form a county fire advisory board to standardize fire codes across unincorporated areas of Okaloosa County. The panel would include the fire chief, inspectors, zoning staff, sprinkler industry and home builders reps, chaired by a county commissioner.
